How do I measure roof pitch?
Roof pitch = Rise ÷ Run (expressed as X:12 in imperial). Place a level horizontally, measure 12 inches along, then measure vertical rise at that point.
What is a standard roof pitch?
Low pitch: 2:12–4:12. Medium (standard): 4:12–9:12. Steep: 9:12 and above. Most residential roofs are 4:12–6:12.
How does pitch affect material quantity?
Steeper pitches require more materials. Use the pitch multiplier (factor) to convert horizontal measurements to actual roof area.
