Frequently asked questions
How is freight class determined?
Freight class (50–500) is based on density, stowability, handling difficulty, and liability. Lower class = denser/easier to ship = lower cost.
How do I calculate freight density?
Density (lb/cu ft) = Weight ÷ Volume. Volume = (L × W × H in inches) ÷ 1,728. This determines the NMFC class range.
What is the cheapest freight class?
Class 50 (densest, easiest) is cheapest. Class 500 (lightest, most difficult) is most expensive. Maximize density to reduce shipping costs.
